Day 6 was supposed to be a cardio day, but other things came up. I did learn something valuable though. I put off going to the gym til the afternoon rather than going first thing in the morning. Whoops! Guess who called. That’s right. My boss. And now I’m going to work rather than the gym.

Let that be a lesson. Anything and everything will come up at anytime of the day. If I want to ensure that I get my workout, I’ve got to go first thing in the morning before distractions come along. This is again motivation for getting out of bed early and taking care of me. Yesterday’s workout was a bust, but I’m not worried. Wednesday brings day 7 and the conclusion to my first week.

My day 7 workout consisted of 20 minutes of cardio followed by a Back and Bicep routine. It felt great. Not so much that I felt strong in my routine, but knowing that I’ve gotten through my first week back in the gym. And I’m excited about the rest of the week. My intensity will pick up and I’ll start pushing some more weight around too.

My diet has been great too. Although I’m a little carbohydrate deprived today. I can definitely feel a little uneasyness in me. A little lack of satisfaction in my gut. That wasn’t intentional, I just found a dish that I love eating. Salad with shrimp, or steak, or chicken, and fresh basil. I use a blend of spinach, romaine, mixed greens and tons of fresh basil. I’m using basil like lettuce. It’s awesome. Dress it with some balsamic and olive oil and then top it with pine nuts and sesame seeds.

Drinking plenty of water has become effortless. When I first started my gallon intake of water daily, I had to continuously remind myself to drink. Now it’s part of my routine. And I’m feeling great because of it. My motivation is high, my energy is great, and I feel better and better everyday.

Tomorrow is day 8 and I’m going to blast out 45 minutes of cardio. Sweet, I know.

Day 5 went as planned. Weekend off, though I still managed to walk the dog 2 miles on Sunday. It’s funny how having a pet makes you not just responsible, but you begin to regain the joy of the simple things in life. Well, I do anyway. Going for a walk makes the dog happy, which in turn makes me happy that I was able to give him what he wants. And it’s good for me too. Walking the dog is one of the simple pleasures of my life.

Monday, another 2 mile walk and then legs at the gym. 20 minutes on the elliptical machine and then 3 sets of 12 for lean muscle mass on 5 different excercises. I’m still in the building a foundation mode. So I was using purposefully lighter weights. The intent was to go easy in an attempt to fend off any soreness. But I can already tell, that’s not going to happen. Even though I had a good foundation before, my muscles still need a little refresher course in the gym.

This is a good thing. At least I can feel a difference even if I don’t see it on the scale or in the mirror. Remember, if you haven’t been in the gym for awhile or ever, this is part of the process. It goes away with the second or third rotation. Enjoy it. You know that your muscles are working and that for them to heal themselves, they are going to have to burn calories. Yes! That’s why I’m here in the first place, right?

I’m moving on to an awesome day at work. See ya

Day 3 went as planned. I was awesome and excited all day. And I hiked 3 miles in Ice Box Canyon.

Day 4 is Saturday and it’s a rest day. I’ve decided that Saturday and Sunday will be my rest days, rather than coinciding my off days with my off work days. For me, when I have a day off work, I usually allow myself to sleep in. That starts my day pleasantly, but it also sets a loaf and lazy kind of mood for the day. Again, pleasant, but generally unrewarding. So I’ve decided that my workout rest days will follow my longest and latest work days. Saturday and Sunday.

Now on my days off, usually Tuesday and Wednesday, I’ll get my days off to a jumpstart with an early morning workout. This will prove to be productive for me as I always feel energized and accomplished after the gym.

Tomorrow, Sunday, Da 5, is a rest day. Of course, there will be a long morning walk with the dog to get his day going and mine too.

Monday puts me back in the gym to have a back to basics foundation leg day. I’m looking forward to it.

Hey, here’s something cool that I realized as I always have a meal replacement shake with me at work so I can eat every four hours. Rather than having some cool shwing-a-ding water bottle or thermos with me, I’ve started using my empty Arrowhead water bottles instead. I always have them on hand for when I’m on the go. So now I recycle them when I’m finished. I let them dry out and then fill them with my meal replacement powder (buy a funnel in the automotive department fo $.99 to make filling easier, or make a paper funnel). Now I don’t have to worry about washing them out after I use them. Or remembering to take them home for that matter.

I don’t know if you’ve ever forgotten to wash out a bottle after drinking a shake, but I have, too many times. And somehow it seems like no amount of washing can get that leftover spoiled smell out of a bottle that sat unwashed for too long. Ooooooh it’s horrible even opening them after they sit overnight.

Later. Be Awesome.

Day 2 started with a glitch. When I woke up to walk the dog at 6am, I forgot it would be dark. My dog, Murphy, walks off leash in the canyons and foothills here in Henderson Nevada. He runs up and down the hillsides like a wild man. Four paws equal four wheel drive, so he climbs to some cool spots. The problem is that so do the coyotes, which we’ve seen on other walks at dawn. Dawn is different than darkness so I opted to go back to bed.

I guess I haven’t been up by 6am in the past month and I failed to realize that our days are growing shorter. I’m looking forward to daylight savings time on Sunday November 2.

So my day started at 8am instead and my routine picked up right where I planned. Drink 16 ozs. of water followed by a cup of caffeinated herbal tea and walk the dog, then hit the gym after another glass of water. I made it home by 10am and I’m ready for post work our protein.

Today was a back to basics workout after a 5 month lay off. Yes, time flies. I did 20 minutes of cardio followed by a light chest a tricep workout. 3 sets of 12 reps with light weights. This is my reintroduction phase so I was more focused on good form and getting my muscles used to being in the gym again, rather than pushing more weight then I was ready for and perhaps pulling a muscle. I’m older now and injuries are more common. That would have been a crap way to start my ninety days.

I’ve got some goals that I intend to accomplish during this training cycle.

Lose weight and gain muscle. Currently I’m weighing in at 180 pounds. I’ve already lost 7 pounds in 10 days by simply drinking a gallon of water daily, eating 5-6 times daily, and supplementing with vitamins and caffeine. I’d like to get to 165 pounds. I want to lose 20 more pounds of fat and put on 5 pounds of lean muscle.

Develop a consistently health lifestyle. I’m the guy that goes to the gym for 3 months and then takes 6 months off. I’m convinced that staying active and healthy is the key to growing old gracefully. This is the time for me to ingrain these habits and make them a lifestyle. That’s a Life List goal right there. I’ll talk about this subject more later.

Feel strong like when I was a kid. As a kid I was fit. I didn’t have to workout because I played hard everyday. You name the sport and I played it. At the playground, I was the kid that climbed to the top of the swing set rather than swinging on it (that drove my Mom crazy) just because it was a challenge. Here’s a few kid accomplishments that stand out for me.

4th grade – I did 77 push ups in two minutes. Set the school record for the year during our P.E. testing. Yep, all of 9 years old and probably weighed 70 pounds. I want to be that strong again.

10th grade – Ran a 6:30 minute mile. Not the best, but it’s a number that stands out that I was capable of when I was 15 and I want to beat it. (I’m going to do the mile test later this week)

24 years old – 24 pull-ups in a row. Ask Jay, he saw it. I want to do 32 to match my age.

I’ve given myself a fitness test to see my current stats and have a foundation to build on and compare against.

Day 1 Testing

35 push ups in two minutes

4 pull ups in a row

5 dips in a row

I cannot do a one legged squat (pistol squat)

1 mile test later this week

65 hindu squats in two minutes

10 hindu push ups in a row

I’ve always been fascinated by someones ability to move around their own body weight. It requires muscle, flexibility, balance, endurance and core strength. To me this really is a test of one’s physical abilities. I’ll get more into body weight calisthenics as the blog goes on.

Keep this in mind. Gracie Jiu Jitsu guys test to see if you can do 30 hindu push ups before they even let you on the mat. Check out YouTube if you’re curious about any of the above exercises.

Have an Awesome day. I’m going to eat.

e

Tomorrow’s To Do List

Up at 7am (it’s still dark at 6)

Head out to Red Rock and hike Ice Box Canyon.

Drink a gallon of water

Eat 3 meals and 3 snacks

Supplement

Be Awesome

Be Excited

Well, it’s day 1 of my first “documented” 90 day cycle. I’ve already started some healthy habits and now it’s time to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together. However, I did have a few inconsistencies and stumbling blocks over the past weekend that have half way negated my efforts. It’s amazing how fast my birthday weekend let my bad habits sneak back into my life. I’ll give you a quick glimpse just to reminisce and get it out of my system.

Lobster and truffle pot pie could be my new favorite food. Kobe beef topped with foie gras is the most delicious way to put your yearly requirement of fat into your body with a single plate. An Aurelio’s Pizza just opened up in Vegas on Eastern for all of you people who know it from Chicagoland. I love eggs benedict and a bloody mary….. or three. Sushi was the healthiest thing I ate this 4 day weekend. Liquid bread (beer), grape juice (wine), and bug juice (Campari and soda) were all consumed heavily, yet I still managed to drink a gallon of water daily. Hooray for small victories! And turning 32.

That’s enough of that. Let’s get to the better stuff. The being a kid stuff. The childish energy stuff. I was going to start this blog tomorrow, but I got so excited that I couldn’t wait. Giddy with excitement. Just like a kid! Ha, It’s funny how that works.

First off I’d like to accomplish a few thing by the end of my 90 days and I’m going to measure my success in a variety of ways. Weight, appearance, strength, abilities, stamina, and cardiovascular health. I’ve also got a few personal records from my childhood and young adulthood that I would like to best. And I’ve got a few thing that are part of My Life List that I’d like to scratch off too.

I’m excited and that’s really step one. Step two is maintaining that excitement and enjoying how it affects my energy. I’ve got a girlfriend who just got home from work and quality time is being called for. That’s all for now, but I’ll pick back up tomorrow after I get back from the gym. Yeeeeaaaaah! The Gym!

Tomorrow’s To Do List

Up at 6am and walk the dog

Gym at 7am for my back to basics workout and condition testing (more details tomorrow)

Drink a gallon of water

Eat 3 meals and 3 snacks

Supplement

Be Awesome

Be Excited
